Maintenance of Coconut Flooring

Finish

The most environmentally friendly finishes are made from water based durable polyurethane. Apply one sealer coat for proper adhesion followed by 1 or 2 top coats for maximum durability. Avoid waxing the coconut flooring as grit and other particles will get embedded in the wax and when trodden on will damage the coconut flooring.

Cleaning

The best way to clean coconut flooring is with a dust mop or vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Regularly clean to avoid the build up of particles that can damage the flooring. If you must wet clean the flooring then avoid strong detergents. Use soapy water or a citrus based cleaner. Do not slop water on the floor, instead wet the floor with a mop. After wet cleaning be sure to dry the surface with a rag thoroughly.

Precautions to keep your coconut flooring in good condition

Place felt mat pads under heavy furniture to prevent it denting the coconut flooring and when you clean be sure to pick up and move furniture rather than drag it. Another important precaution is to place mats and shoe boxes next to external doors to encourage people to take off their shoes before walking on your coconut flooring. Often people bring particles such as grit, stones and other small hard objects into the house stuck to the soles of their shoes. These particles when pressed into the flooring will damage it. Also it is very important to prevent people wearing cleats or very narrow high heels and walking on your coconut flooring. These shoe types are notorious for damaging hardwood and other types of natural flooring.

Another good precaution is to place runners along the main routes in the house to catch any particles. As with the door mats it is important to shake out these runners regularly to get rid of unwanted particles. If you have pets then consider cutting their nails to stop them damaging your coconut flooring.

If somebody spills a drink on the floor then mop it up immediately.

Finally, remember that coconut flooring is a natural flooring like hardwood and bamboo and as such is susceptible to big changes in relative humidity. Consult your coconut flooring supplier about the safe relative humidity range for your coconut flooring. If you are worried that the relative humidity in the room might be damaging your coconut flooring then buy a humifidifier or dehumidifier (depending on whether the air has too little or too much water for your flooring).

With proper maintenance there is no reason why your coconut flooring won't last your life time.
